About Pipilo chlorurus (Audubon, 1839)

The green-tailed towhee, scientifically named Pipilo chlorurus, is the smallest of all towhees, and still counts as one of the larger members of the American sparrow family Passerellidae. Its breeding range spans most of the interior Western United States, while its winter range includes Mexico and the southern edge of the Southwestern United States. This species can be identified by the bright green stripes along the edges of its wings. It also has a distinct white throat and a rufous cap. Adults measure 7.25 inches (18.4 cm) in length and weigh 29 grams (1.0 ounce). Green-tailed towhees are fairly tame, but often remain hidden underneath bushes. They are fairly common in habitats that contain sagebrush and similar bushy vegetation, and are uncommonly seen by people due to their habit of staying under cover.
