Piper lanatum Roxb. is a perennial root climbing plant. Its stems can grow up to 2 cm (0.79 in) in diameter. The leaves of this species range from broadly or narrowly ovate to elliptic in shape, and can reach a maximum length of 18 cm (7.1 in) and maximum width of 12 cm (4.7 in). It produces spiked inflorescences that grow on stems opposite from leaves; male inflorescence spikes grow up to 7 cm (2.8 in) long, while female spikes can reach up to 18 cm (7.1 in) long. Its flowers are very small, with a diameter of less than 1 mm (0.04 in). Botanically, its fruit is classified as a berry, around 6 mm (0.24 in) in diameter, and each berry holds a single seed.
