About Pionopsitta pileata (Scopoli, 1769)
The pileated parrot, with the scientific name Pionopsitta pileata (Scopoli, 1769), measures 20 to 22 cm (7.9 to 8.7 in) in length and weighs 98 to 120 g (3.5 to 4.2 oz). Adult individuals have an almost entirely green body, with a yellowish abdomen. Their primaries, primary coverts, and the edges and tips of their tail feathers are dull blue. Males have red coloring on the forehead, crown, lores, and upper ear coverts. Females have no red at all, but do have a faint blue wash across the forehead and breast. Immature males have less red on the head than adult males, and immature females have less blue on the wings than adult females. This parrot species is distributed in southeastern Brazil, extending south from Bahia into eastern Paraguay and Argentina's Misiones Province. It primarily lives in humid forest, but can also be found in somewhat more open, drier forest dominated by Araucaria, and in partially cleared landscapes. It occurs at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft).
