The accepted scientific name of this species is Pilophorus perplexus Douglas & Scott, 1875. Adult individuals of Pilophorus perplexus are brown in colour, and reach a length of 4.5 millimetres (0.18 in). They have silver-coloured bands on their forewings, which are also covered in hair. Compared to the closely related species Pilophorus cinnamopterus, the forewings of Pilophorus perplexus are much duller in colour. This species feeds on aphids.
