About Pieris ergane (Geyer, 1828)
Pieris ergane (Geyer, 1828) has a forewing length of 19 to 24 mm, as recorded in Seitz. This species, also referred to as P. ergane Hhn. (= narcaea Frr) (20 d), is found in Southeast Europe and Asia Minor. Both males and females have no black markings on the underside of their wings. Seasonal forms of the species appear to differ only slightly, though this point has not been confirmed with certainty. longomaculata Rostagno is yellowish white on the upperside of the wings; its black spots on the forewing are darker, larger, and elongated. The underside of its forewing is straw-coloured, with a chrome-yellow apical spot, and the underside of the hindwing is also chrome-yellow. In the female aberration magnimaculata Rostagno, the black spots are even more developed than in longomaculata, while in the male aberration semimaculata Rostagno, the upperside of the forewing is entirely white, except for a dark apical spot. All three of these forms have been observed in Central Italy. The larva is dull blue-green, with a bluish green head. Its entire body is dotted with many small black warts covered in white hairs. The mouth-parts are pale brown. On each segment, the stigma-line is only represented by a yellow spot, which holds a light brown stigma with a dark brown edge. The thoracic legs match the body color, the claws are light brown, and the prolegs have light brown soles, as noted by Spuler.
