About Pieris cheiranthi Hübner, 1816

This species, Pieris cheiranthi Hübner, 1816, is very similar to Pieris brassicae, but its black discal patches are much larger and fused together. It has a wingspan ranging from 57 to 66 millimeters. For distribution, the Canary white is widespread across La Palma. On Tenerife, it is restricted only to northern coastal areas. The latest recorded sighting of the species on La Gomera was in 1975, and it is considered probably extinct there. There are also unconfirmed reports of Pieris cheiranthi occurring on Gran Canaria. In terms of habitat, the Canary white lives in wet, moist, shady gorges located within laurel forests. It can also be found outside of laurel forest zones, for example on wet cliffs that have a matching suitable microclimate.
