About Pieriballia viardi (Boisduval, 1836)

Pieriballia is a genus of butterflies in the family Pieridae, which was erected by Alexander Barrett Klots in 1933. Its only species is Pieriballia viardi, commonly known as the painted white or viardi white. This species was first formally described by Jean Baptiste Boisduval in 1836. Pieriballia viardi is found across a range from Mexico to Bolivia and Paraguay. Stray individuals of this species can also be found in southern Texas, located in the United States. The species inhabits rainforests and transitional cloud forests. The wingspan of adult Pieriballia viardi measures approximately 57 mm, which equals 2.2 inches. The larvae of this butterfly feed on Capparis pseudocacao.
