About Pierella nereis Drury, 1782

Upperside: Antennae are black. The head, thorax, and abdomen are grey-brown. The anterior wings are grey-brown, thin, and slightly transparent, with a small light-coloured bar that runs from the anterior edge near the tips to the posterior edge. For the posterior wings, the one-third portion closest to the body is grey-brown, divided by a line drawn across the wing from the anterior edge to the abdominal edge. Immediately after this portion is an angulated white patch; the rest of the posterior wings are orange, with two black eyespots that have white centres. One eyespot is placed at the upper corner, and the other at the abdominal corner, with a small white spot joined to the upper part of the upper eyespot. The edges of the posterior wings are bordered with dark brown. Underside: The palpi, legs, breast, and abdomen are cream-coloured. The portion of the anterior wings closest to the tips is tinged with red-brown; the remainder of the anterior wings matches the colour of the upperside. The portion of the posterior wings closest to the body is pale clay-coloured, and this pale area occupies half of the wing. Below this pale area is a white bar, and the remainder of the posterior wings is dark orange. On this underside, the two black eyespots are very small, and the white spot above the upper eyespot is less distinct. The wings of Pierella nereis are larger than is typically seen for insects of this tribe. The wings are dentated, while the anterior wings have entire edges. The wingspan measures 3 inches (76 mm).
