About Picus squamatus Vigors, 1831
This species is a large green woodpecker, with distinct scaling patterns from its breast to its vent. It is similar in appearance to the streak-throated woodpecker, but is larger, and has an unstreaked throat and upper breast. It has a black moustachial stripe and white supercilia bordered with black. Its tail is strongly barred. The male has a red crown, while the female has a blackish crown. It has a large pale bill. Its natural habitats are boreal forests, temperate forests, and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
