About Pictocolumbella ocellata (Link, 1807)

The shell of Pictocolumbella ocellata ranges in size from 13 mm to 20 mm. Shell color is most commonly dark brown, but can also be red or orange. The outer surface of the shell features patterns of white or yellowish markings, which can take the form of zigzags, small spots, or triangle-like shapes. The tip of the shell is white, and the area near the shell opening is pinkish. This species is found in the Indian Ocean along Madagascar, and in warm tropical waters of the Western Pacific. Pictocolumbella ocellata, commonly called the lightning dove shell, lives on sandy and muddy bottoms, and its shell color varies quite widely among individuals.
