About Pictichromis paccagnellae (Axelrod, 1973)
Pictichromis paccagnellae (Axelrod, 1973), commonly known as the royal dottyback, also goes by the common names bicolor dottyback, gramma dotty, and false gramma. It is a fish that is commonly kept in marine aquariums. The front portion of its body is bright purple, and its posterior body is yellow. In aquarium settings, it grows up to three inches (6 centimeters) in length. This dottyback will defend its territory against fish that are several times its own size, but it coexists well with many other common aquarium fish. It is sometimes mistaken for the royal gramma, Gramma loreto. Its specific name honors the Paccagnella family of Bologna, who worked as aquarium fish wholesalers and provided the type specimen to author Herbert R. Axelrod.
