This species can be identified by several visible physical traits: the mesonotum has yellow bands, the scutellum is yellow, and the frons is yellow. The larval stage of Phytoliriomyza melampyga feeds by mining the tissues of Himalayan balsam, which has the scientific name Impatiens glandulifera. This species is distributed across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
