Phylloscopus tenellipes Swinhoe, 1860 measures 12 cm in length. It has brownish upperparts, paired with a contrasting greyish-brown crown and nape. The whitish supercilium is strongly contrasting; it does not reach the forehead, but extends well behind the eyes. Its eyeline is dark brown and wider behind the eye. The cheeks are mottled pale brown, and the throat is whitish. White undertail coverts contrast with the paler olive-brown rump and uppertail coverts, and the species has no greenish tinge to its plumage. The breast and belly are whitish, with a pale brown wash.
