About Phyllonorycter tiliacella (Chambers, 1871)
Phyllonorycter tiliacella is a moth species in the family Gracillariidae. This species is found in Canada, specifically in the provinces of Québec and Ontario, and in the United States, where it has been recorded in Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Maine, Vermont and Connecticut. The larvae of Phyllonorycter tiliacella feed on Tilia species, including Tilia americana. Larvae create mines inside the leaves of their host plant. The mine they produce is an upperside tentiform mine that is white in color and densely covered with dark brown speckles. The pupa of the species' summer brood is suspended in a very thin, slight silken web. For the overwintering generation that remains in the pupal stage through winter, a denser cocoon is spun, and this cocoon is attached to both the upper and lower leaf surfaces.
