About Phyllodytes luteolus (Wied-Neuwied, 1821)

The yellow heart-tongued frog, scientifically named Phyllodytes luteolus, is a species of frog in the Hylidae family that is endemic to Brazil. Individuals of this species have been observed at elevations up to 650 meters above sea level. This frog inhabits Atlantic forest and Caatinga habitats, where it lives on bromeliad plants. Each clutch laid by a female of this species contains only a few eggs, and females use more than one bromeliad for egg-laying over a single breeding season. This species is not currently at risk of extinction, but some local populations are threatened by habitat loss and the collection of the bromeliad plants the frogs depend on. Unlike many other species in the genus Phyllodytes, the yellow heart-tongued frog is able to survive in degraded habitats, including secondary forests that are regrowing after logging.
