Phyllodesmium opalescens is a species first described by Rudman in 1991. This species reaches a maximum length of 20 millimeters, and it does not sequester zooxanthellae. The type locality for this species is Mirs Bay, Hong Kong, and it has also been reported from Korea and the Philippines. The food source of Phyllodesmium opalescens has not been identified.
