About Phyllocnistis ampelopsiella Chambers, 1871

Phyllocnistis ampelopsiella is a moth species in the family Gracillariidae. Its confirmed distribution includes Québec, Canada, and the U.S. states of Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, and New York. Known host plants for this species are Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Psedera quinquefolia, and Vitis vinifera. Larvae of this species create leaf mines on their host plants. They form a white, convoluted mine on the underside of the leaf. While the mine is somewhat linear in form, it winds back and forth between the leaf veins, moving from the midrib out to the leaf margin and back again. This activity continues until all the cuticle in the mined area is separated, at which point the mine develops into a blotch.
