About Phyllidiella rosans (Bergh, 1873)

Phyllidiella rosans is a species of nudibranch. Its dorsal surface is black, marked with longitudinal pink ridges, and its rhinophores are solid black. This species was first collected in Tahiti by Andrew Garrett, who sent specimens to both William Harper Pease and Rudolph Bergh. In 1868, Pease described this species under the name Phyllidia nigra, but this name was already occupied by an older species, Phyllidia nigra described by van Hasselt in 1824. In 1873, Bergh re-described this species as Phyllidia rosans. Confirmed confirmed reports of Phyllidiella rosans come from Hawaii and Fiji. Published reports of this species from the Maldives, Tanzania, and other localities in the Indian Ocean likely refer to a separate, distinct species.
