It is native to four U.S. states: New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida, as well as the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Across all parts of its native range, Drummond's leafflower always grows in sand or sandy soil. This species is toxic to sheep, cattle, and goats, though the specific toxic compound that causes this toxicity has not been identified.
