About Phyciodes batesii Reakirt, 1865
The upperside of the wings is dark brown with orange markings. The forewing has a pale postmedian band as well as submarginal bands. On female individuals, the black submarginal band features small dots. Both sexes have antenna knobs marked with black and white. The total wingspan of this species ranges from 25 to 38 mm. For its life cycle, adults fly once per year between the months of May and July. A partial second brood sometimes occurs in Michigan. While adult moths are active, females lay their eggs in groups on host plants. Fourth-instar caterpillars of this species hibernate.
