About Phrynosoma orbiculare (Linnaeus, 1758)

Phrynosoma orbiculare, commonly known as the horned toad, can be recognized by its distinctive single row of lateral abdominal fringe scales and two short occipital horns. This species is restricted to the high plateau region of central Mexico, and occurs specifically in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, Morelos, Nuevo León, Puebla, and Veracruz. It inhabits a wide range of both primary and secondary habitats; primary habitats include dry scrubland, pine-oak forest, oak forest, and juniper forest, while secondary habitats include agricultural land, agave fields, and Opuntia fields. Phrynosoma orbiculare is viviparous, meaning it gives birth to live young.
