About Phrynosoma asio Cope, 1864

The giant horned lizard, scientifically named Phrynosoma asio, is a species of phrynosomatid lizard that is endemic to the Pacific coast of southern Mexico. It is the largest and most slender of all horned lizards, with a more typical lizard-like overall appearance, and is capable of surviving in desert habitats. The spines found on its back and sides are formed from modified scales, while the horns on its head are true horns that contain a bony core. This species gets its common name from its large size: individuals can reach 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in total length from snout to tail.
