About Photinus corrusca (Linnaeus, 1767)

Ellychnia corrusca (also known by the scientific name Photinus corrusca (Linnaeus, 1767)) is a species of beetle. Adult beetles are medium to large in size, measuring 9 to 18 mm (0.4 to 0.7 in) in length. The head shield, called the pronotum, has a black rounded central mark. This central mark is bordered by yellow and pink on both sides, and the edges of the pronotum are black. The wing covers, called elytra, are dark and covered in fine hairs. These hairs can look greenish or golden in certain light conditions. Adult Ellychnia corrusca do not have glowing lantern organs. The shape of the last abdominal segment on the underside of adults differs between males and females: in males it is small and rounded, while in females it is larger and triangular with a small central notch. Larvae have dark bodies with pink sides, thick bristled bodies, and grow up to 17 mm (0.67 in) long. Each larva has two glowing lanterns. This species is common throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada east of the Rocky Mountains. It can be found in a variety of habitats, and is most common in maturing hardwood forests, yards, and open parks that contain large trees.
