This species is distributed across North America, ranging from Quebec and Ontario in the north, south to Florida, and extending west to Kansas and Texas. The wingspan of the adult common oak moth is approximately 38 mm. Adult moths are active on the wing from March to July, with the active period varying by location. The larvae of Phoberia atomaris feed on oak species, including the Northern red oak. The species is univoltine, meaning it produces only one generation per year, and most defoliation caused by its larvae occurs during the spring.
