About Phlox pulvinata (Wherry) Cronquist
Phlox pulvinata is a phlox species commonly known as cushion phlox. It is native to the western United States, where it grows in mountain and plateau habitat, including rocky subalpine and alpine climates and exposed tundra. It is a perennial herb that grows flat against the ground in a dense, cushionlike shape. Its very short stems are covered with hair-fringed lance-shaped leaves, each no more than one centimeter (2⁄5 in) long. In many regions, this plant is one of the first to flower each spring. It blooms densely, creating carpets of blossoms. Each white to pale pink flower has a tubular throat up to one centimeter (2⁄5 in) long and a flat five-lobed corolla.
