About Phlegmariurus varius (R.Br.) A.R.Field & Bostock
Phlegmariurus varius is a fir moss or club moss belonging to the family Lycopodiaceae. It is distributed in Australia, New Zealand, and their associated islands. One of its widely known synonyms is Huperzia varia. This species can grow as a terrestrial plant, a lithophyte (growing on rock), or an epiphyte (growing on other plants). It produces one or multiple branches arranged in a spiral pattern, covered in slender leaves that taper to a sharp point. The plant's color ranges from green to green-yellow, and it may sometimes appear orange. A recent publication presents both morphological and genetic evidence supporting the separation of Phlegmariurus billardierei — the only Lycopodiaceae species endemic to New Zealand — from Phlegmariurus varius.
