Botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott first formally described this species in 1856. The inflorescences of P. giganteum are thermogenetic, and produce a sweet scent. In the English-speaking Caribbean, this plant is commonly known by the common names Elephant Ear or Chinny Leaf.
