For the species Philipomyia aprica (Meigen, 1820), adult females reach a maximum length of 18 millimetres (0.71 inches). This species' large compound eyes are bright green, hairless, and lack ocular bands. The terminal segment of the antennae is brownish-black. The thorax is dark-brown and noticeably hairy. Each black abdominal tergite has a distinct, clearer band at its end. Wings and legs are yellowish-brown, and halteres are brownish-yellow. This horse fly species is distributed across most of Europe and the Near East, including Caucasia, Turkey, and Iran.
