About Philesia magellanica J.F.Gmel.
Philesia is a South American genus of flowering plants in the monocot family Philesiaceae. It was first described as a genus in 1789, and its native common name is Coicopihue. Only one species is known in this genus: Philesia magellanica J.F.Gmel. This species is native to southern Chile, ranging from the Los RÃos region to the Magallanes region, and to southern Argentina. Unusually for a monocot, Philesia magellanica is a suckering shrub. It grows up to 1.2 metres (3 feet 11 inches) tall, and spreads via stolons. Its leaves are linear, 15 to 35 mm long and 3 to 8 mm broad. The upper leaf surface is glossy green, while the underside has two white stomatal bands. Each flower has six tepals: the outer three are shorter, measuring 15 to 22 mm long, and the inner three are longer, measuring 45 to 65 mm long. Flowers are mostly pink, though darker, more purple color variations have been recorded.
