About Phellinus chrysoloma (Fr.) Donk
Phellinus chrysoloma (Fr.) Donk, also called Porodaedalea chrysoloma, is a fungus species in the family Hymenochaetaceae. It is distributed across central Europe, and is also found in southern Sweden, Norway, and Finland. This species parasitizes Norway spruce, typically growing on the tree's branches. It is considered a key species of old-growth boreal forests. In Sweden, Phellinus chrysoloma is classified as near threatened on the Swedish Red List, due to loss of its habitat. Porodaedalea abietis, which is also known as Porodaedalea laricis, is a sister species of Porodaedalea chrysoloma. The main morphological difference between the two species is found in the pores of the hymenium. Phellinus chrysoloma has elongated, irregular pores that range from daedaleoid to labyrinthine, while Phellinus abietis has more regular, cylindrical pores, with some elongated pores.
