About Phaonia pallida (Fabricius, 1787)

Phaonia pallida (Fabricius, 1787) adults reach a body length of approximately 5.5 to 7.9 millimetres (0.22 to 0.31 inches). This fly species has an orange body with a very hairy thorax. Its antennae are made of three segments and carry a feathery arista. The legs and halteres (balancers) are yellow, while the tarsi are black. The eyes are dark red: in females, the eyes are separated by a yellow marking, while in males the eyes are positioned very close together. This species occurs across parts of the Palearctic realm, including Europe (Sicily and the Azores included), Russia, and the Asian countries of Israel, Turkey, and Iran. These flies primarily live in deciduous forests and woodlands, and are especially found along spruce forest edges.
