About Phalaenopsis pulcherrima (Lindl.) J.J.Sm.
Phalaenopsis pulcherrima (Lindl.) J.J.Sm. is an orchid species distributed across the region from Hainan Island to western Malesia. This species uses a deceptive pollination strategy: it does not offer any rewards to its pollinators, and it gains an advantage by blooming during the same period that reward-provoking plant species bloom. Pollination by three specific bee species—Amegilla nigritar, Amegilla zonata, and Nomia punctulata—has been recorded. Amegilla bees are the most important pollinators for this species. Other diurnal insects have also been observed interacting with the flowers of this orchid, including four additional bee species, two butterfly species, one moth species, and two other unidentified insects.
