About Phacelia mutabilis Greene
Phacelia mutabilis Greene, commonly called changeable phacelia, is a flowering plant species in the borage family. It is native to the western United States and Baja California, growing in mountains, foothills, forested areas, open habitats, and deserts. This perennial herb may grow in a mat-like form, grow decumbent, or grow upright, with hairy stems that reach a maximum length of 60 centimeters. Its leaves bear lance-shaped or oval blades, which are sometimes divided into 3 segments. The plant's inflorescence is a one-sided curving or coiling cyme, made up of tubular to bell-shaped flowers. Each flower is roughly half a centimeter long, and can be white, yellowish, or purplish in color, with long protruding stamens. Each flower is surrounded by a calyx of elongated, hairy sepals.
