Persea indica (L.) Spreng. is a large evergreen tree that belongs to the laurel family, Lauraceae, and the genus Persea — a group of evergreen trees that also includes the avocado. This species is native to humid upland areas of Madeira and the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic. It is currently threatened by habitat loss. It has also been introduced to several nearby islands in the Azores.
