Merriam's pocket mouse, scientifically named Perognathus merriami J.A.Allen, 1892, is a small species with a smooth, silky coat. Adults have an average total length of 115 mm (4.5 in), including an average tail length of 65 mm (2.6 in). The species' size and fur shade vary across its geographic range. Its general base color is yellowish, with a dark sheen created by black tips on the longer guard hairs. Its underparts, legs, and feet are white or creamy, and the underside of its tail is paler than the upper surface. It has dark streaks on the sides of its face, and a pale ring surrounds each eye. There is a white spot on the inner margin of each ear, a white patch under each ear, and a small buff-colored patch behind each ear.
