About Pericome caudata A.Gray
Pericome caudata A.Gray is a large, branching, leafy perennial herb or subshrub that reaches a maximum height close to 2 metres (6+1⁄2 ft). It has glandular, resinous, sparse hairs, and is aromatic. Its leaves are somewhat triangular in shape, and sometimes have a few large teeth or sharp lobes. The leaf blade grows up to 12 centimetres (4+3⁄4 in) long, and is attached to a petiole. Leaf size and shape varies across the species' range. Its inflorescence is a cluster of many flower heads; each flower head is less than 1 centimetre wide, and filled with golden yellow disc florets. This species is native to the southwestern United States, extending east as far as Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas, and also grows in northern Mexico. It grows in rocky habitat, most often in hills and mountains, and sometimes occurs in disturbed areas. The Navajo have used this plant for a range of medicinal and ceremonial purposes.
