It is classified as a darter in the subfamily Etheostomatinae, which belongs to the family Percidae. This same family also includes perches, ruffes, and pikeperches. This fish is found exclusively in the Brazos, Colorado, Concho River, Guadalupe, and San Antonio River drainages located in Texas.
