About Penthimia nigra (Goeze, 1778)
Adults of Penthimia nigra reach 4–6 millimetres (0.16–0.24 in) in length. Body coloration varies from the typical black form to reddish brown, with two orange spots or more or less extended reddish areas on the pronotum. The eyes are reddish brown, and the forewings overlap at the end of the abdomen. This species clearly shows the row of spines on the third tibia that characterizes the Cicadellidae family. Adult leafhoppers of this species are most commonly found from April through July. They feed on sap from deciduous trees, especially Populus species (poplars) and Quercus species (oaks). While they are capable of flight, they often prefer to jump away when disturbed. This species typically has just one generation per year, and its larvae overwinter. Penthimia nigra is present across most of Europe and in the Near East.
