About Penthe obliquata (Fabricius, 1801)

Penthe obliquata (Fabricius, 1801) occurs in North America, specifically in the eastern and midwestern regions of the United States and Canada. Adults measure between 11 and 14 mm in length, and have a dark, rounded body with a distinct orange scutellum. This species can be found under the loose bark of decaying trees, as well as within dry fungi. It inhabits a broad variety of forested habitats, including mature hardwood forests, floodplain forests, swamps, and pine forests. Known fungal hosts for this insect include Polyporus versicolor, Polyporus varius, Fomitopsis pinicola, and other fleshy and woody polypore fungi. The global population of Penthe obliquata is considered secure, though large portions of its range do not currently have a status rank from NatureServe.
