About Pentatoma rufipes (Linnaeus, 1758)

Pentatoma rufipes can grow to a length of 11–14 mm (0.43–0.55 inches). These are large, flat shield bugs that have the shape of an escutcheon-type shield. Their body is dark brown in autumn, and lighter, usually bronze-colored, in summer. They have red-orange to cream colored markings at the tip of their scutella. The legs and the first segment of their antennae are usually red-brown or bright orange. A distinguishing characteristic of this species is a pair of forward-extending projections that start from the shoulders at the front of the dorsal thorax. The larvae are dark when young, and become lighter as they age, with the lightening being most prominent on the hind part of the body.
