About Penstemon pseudospectabilis M.E.Jones
Penstemon pseudospectabilis, commonly called desert beardtongue or desert penstemon, is a species of penstemon. It is native to the southwestern United States, where it grows in desert and plateau habitats, including areas like sandy washes, scrub, and woodland. This plant is typically a shrub that reaches up to one meter in height, and produces many erect stems. Its thin leaves are oval-shaped with wide pointed tips and serrated edges. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, and many are fully fused at their bases around the stem to form a disc. The inflorescence holds tubular flowers that have expanded, lobed mouths. Glandular hairs cover most of the flower’s surfaces, with only the staminode left hairless. The flower can grow up to 2.5 centimeters long and is reddish pink in color.
