About Penstemon grinnellii Eastw.

Penstemon grinnellii Eastw., commonly known as Grinnell's beardtongue, is a species of penstemon. It is endemic to California, where it occurs in multiple mountain ranges spanning from the ranges around the San Francisco Bay Area through the Sierra Nevada to the Peninsular Ranges near the Mexican border. This plant is a perennial herb that grows upright stems reaching a maximum height of 85 centimeters. Its leaves are oblong, can grow up to 9 centimeters long, and are folded along their length and curved backward. A glandular inflorescence bears several tubular flowers that are 1 to 2 centimeters long, and have colors ranging from purple-tinged white to violet. The mouth of each flower has three lower lobes marked with dark streaks, a hairy throat, and a protruding staminode covered in long hairs.
