About Penelope pileata Wagler, 1830

The white-crested guan, with the scientific name Penelope pileata Wagler, 1830, is a large bird that reaches an approximate length of 80 centimetres (31 in). It has a long crest of white feathers that gives the species its common name, alongside bluish cheeks, black upper parts glossed with green, dark reddish-brown underparts, and a long black tail. Its vocalizations are raucous cackles, sounding like "eh-uh" or "u u u u u". This bird is endemic to Brazil. Its range is restricted to the south-central and southeastern regions of the Amazon basin, though it extends just across the Rio Araguaia into the Cerrado ecoregion. It inhabits tropical forest, most commonly dense solid-ground forest, and sometimes can be found in seasonally-flooded areas.
