About Peltigera praetextata (Flörke ex Sommerf.) Zopf
Peltigera praetextata has flat lobes that grow up to 5 cm (2 inches) long, and it often forms circular growth patterns. When wet, its body is dark green, frequently with a reddish centre; when dry, it turns greyish. It is tomentous, meaning it is covered in fine hairs. Unlike most lichens, it does not reproduce vegetatively via isidia or soredia, instead it uses phyllidia for this form of reproduction. It is also often fertile, producing round to saddle-shaped red apothecial discs. Ecologically, Peltigera praetextata grows most often over moss or on tree bark, but it can also be found growing on bare soil. It is a common species across temperate and boreal ecosystems.
