About Peltigera lepidophora (Vain.) Bitter
Peltigera lepidophora, commonly called the scaly pelt, is a foliose lichen species belonging to the family Peltigeraceae. Finnish lichenologist Edvard August Vainio first published this taxon in 1878, classifying it as a variety of Peltigera canina. German botanist Friedrich August Georg Bitter raised it to full species status in 1904. This lichen has a thallus that ranges in color from pale to dark brown, made up of rounded, concave lobes that measure 0.2 to 0.4 inches (5 to 10 mm) across. The upper surface of the thallus is covered with isidia, while the lower surface has pale, indistinct veins and unbranched rhizines. It grows on exposed soil, including locations like roadsides and trailbanks.
