Peltigera horizontalis is a species of lichen that belongs to the Peltigeraceae family. In 1762, British botanist William Hudson first described this organism under the scientific name Lichen horizontalis. German botanist Johann Christian Gottlob Baumgarten moved the species into the genus Peltigera in 1790, establishing its current accepted scientific name Peltigera horizontalis (Huds.) Baumg.
