About Pelophylax porosus (Cope, 1868)

The Daruma pond frog, with the scientific name Pelophylax porosus, is a member of the frog family Ranidae. This species has two recognized subspecies: P. porosus porosus, known as the Tokyo Daruma pond frog, and P. porosus brevipodus, known as the Nagoya Daruma pond frog. The species is endemic to Japan. On average, adult males measure 3.5 to 6.2 cm in length, while adult females measure 3.7 to 7.3 cm. Its natural habitats include temperate grassland, rivers, freshwater marshes, ponds, irrigated land, canals, and ditches. Its primary habitat is rice fields, which are important for its breeding and production of new generations of frogs. The International Union for Conservation of Nature does not consider this species to be threatened. Daruma pond frogs breed from April to July, and their typical lifespan ranges from 3 to 4 years.
