About Pelargonium tomentosum Jacq.
Pelargonium tomentosum Jacq. is a tall, spreading plant species that can reach up to one metre in both width and height. It is a very soft, hairy plant with a strong mint scent, which comes from menthone in its leaves, and it produces small white flowers. Its leaves are green-grey and have a wide, three-lobed shape. Depending on the local climate, Pelargonium tomentosum can be grown as a houseplant or an outdoor perennial, and it also has several additional uses. First, its leaves are edible and work well as a flavouring for cakes or tea. The leaves are not commonly eaten, however, because their hairiness is considered somewhat unappealing. Second, the oils in its leaves have astringent properties, so a poultice made from the plant can be used to treat sprains and bruises. If the menthol is extracted properly, it can also be used just like mint to soothe sore throats. Third, the highly aromatic leaves of Pelargonium tomentosum can be used in potpourri.
