About Pegusa lascaris (Risso, 1810)

The sand sole, scientific name Pegusa lascaris, is a fish species belonging to the family Soleidae. It is a marine, subtropical, demersal fish that can reach a maximum length of 40 centimetres (16 inches). It has a widespread distribution: it can be found throughout the northeastern and southeastern Atlantic Ocean, reaching as far south as the Gulf of Guinea, and it also inhabits the Mediterranean Sea. It has been recorded within the Suez Canal. For a long period, soles caught in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov were incorrectly identified as Blackhand soles, which were classified at the time as the subspecies P. l. nasuta. Blackhand soles are now recognized as a separate species. Modern research confirms that sand sole do actually live in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov basin.
