About Pediomelum canescens (Michx.) Rydb.
Pediomelum canescens (Michx.) Rydb. grows as a shrub or subshrub that reaches a height between 30 and 100 cm (1.0 and 3.3 ft). Its leaves can be either palmate or odd-pinnate, and are 1 to 3 foliate. Leaflets are elliptic to obovate in shape, measuring 1.5 to 6 cm (0.6 to 2.4 in) in length and 1 to 3 cm (0.4 to 1.2 in) in width. When it produces inflorescences, its blooms are blue to purple in color. Its petals measure between 8 and 15 mm (0.3 and 0.6 in) in length. When it produces fruit, the fruit is ovoid in shape and approximately 1 centimeter in length. This species is native to the United States coastal plain, where its range extends from southeastern Virginia to Florida, and westward to Alabama. It grows primarily in sandy habitats, including pine flatwoods and longleaf pine sandhills.
